Has someone got a suggestion to fix this :
I installed 9.2.1 on a new HP server. The 3 hard drives came from another FreeNAS server, the import into a UFS volume worked well and all the data and folders seemed to be ok. Set up shares and started CIFS. I started setting up permissions, users and groups to control access by the various users. Then deleted some unused jails. At this stage CIFS stopped running, it was not possible to switch it on again. I then reinstalled FreeNAS on the server, this wrote a new configuration file. I imported volumes again, and set up shares, but still CIFS will not start. Below is a portion of the console log that may be relevant :

Feb 16 13:05:56 freenas notifier: nmbd not running? (check /var/run/samba/nmbd.pid).
It seems that the problem may be with pid for winbindd smbd and nmbd. The problem seems to be stored in the volume/directory structure that contains our data (that used to also contain the jails). Any suggestions please. I am not fluent in Unix/FreeBSD.
Thanks. Richard
