FreeNas generate a lot load cycles like in version 8.0.2
my HDD´s are new and run a few days in my NAS and have over 4000 load cylces

normal is 3-4 per day

and after 300.000 it destroys the HDD

I set the Advanced Power Management to 254
and hope that will helps for the moment

but its definitely a FreeNAS 8.2 Problem
because 8.0.1 and 8.0.4 doesn't have this problem

Alot of logging/access to the drives can apparently cause the load cycle to increase..

I ran WDIDLE3.exe (to disable) on both my remaining green drives (wd20ears) and the load cycle issue disappeared.. I had done alot of testing on the first green drive I got that was used for primary storage.. A month ago the drive went wonky at about 150,000 load cycles.. The drive was RMA and replaced with a wd20earx.. It's still gonna sit on the sata 2 port as backup as I just don't trust the green drives yet.. The failure didn't seem related to the load/unload though.. I read up on the drives decided to disable with wdidle3.exe as these are NAS storage/backup drives.. In windows it increases aswell but not that much? I think depends alot on power settings etc.. The 8 second idle though is just weird..

I know it's late but WDIDLE either changes a setting on the green drive itself (firmware) or atleast masks the SMART output so people don't see it as like 150,000+ in like a year.. WD does say not to use these drives 24/7 so.... They are "green" for a reason...

That's okay. For the people that don't do their homework, they'll figure out that WD won't honor the warranty since the hard drive wasn't used "as designed and warrantied".. whoops!

I was ok returning mine but it wasn't in use for along time.. I'm thinking the green drives are going to go belly up before they earn the difference in any power savings from using them.. Mine are in a mirror and spun down as they are never used really... Another backup spot for important files.. I'm going to move to red or probably Seagate NAS drives eventually..
