Hi,

I've recently completed a fresh install of FreeNAS. I had issues with plugins see HERE but I reinstalled it and my plugin issues are now resolved.and now.

I just cannot get SMB service started. I even completed another fresh install of FreeNAS and still the same issue persists.

SMB configuration is attached as two files (all defaults). I have tried setting the maximum protocol to SMB2 as mentioned on page 287 of the freenas.pdf which is HERE but still it won't start.

I have done the testparm as it mentioned and the results are attached and the Global Parameters are attached also.

I'm not hugely familiar with FreeNAS but I know it's worth persisting as I have been running FreeNAS 9 for many years and recently decided to upgrade it, along with my storage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want help, please get rid of the imgur links and post the images directly to the forum. Just drag and drop or copy/paste into the text box.

Also, what's your hardware?

No, that is clearly not the same problem. Start a new thread and include all the information that the forum rules request but that you left out.

I've removed the links. Drag and drop does nothing at all for me. Copy and paste does nothing at all. To upload I need a url it says.

EDIT: I got it to work it has to be opened in a new window. not just in the little "quick edit" pop up box that appears when you hit edit.

I'm using a HP Microserver 54L with 8gb of RAM. 4 x 2TB and 1 x 4tb (in the optical drive bay).

Sounds like exactly the same issue as me. My AFP service starts fine but I don't have mac's to test it out with. Can you be more specific on what you have tried so others can help us better, unless its everything that I have already listed in here.

How is that not the same issue? My AFP service is fine also but I don't use Mac.

Hmm, I'll have to check that, I haven't tried it in the quick edit box.

I misread that, sorry. I missed the AFP part. That said, it's not clear to me that his problem is Samba not even starting.

Try verifying the install. If that passes, file a bug report and post the issue number here.

How does one verify the install? Happy to file a bug report once that is done.

If the service won't start how is that not our problem?

It is, but he doesn't make it clear that Samba isn't running - just that clients can't reach it.

System / Update / Verify Install

Verifying...

EDIT - It came back with All Flles verified successfully. I will raise a bug report as you suggested.

Is there a command that I can run to confirm that SMB is not running?

Well, the GUI itself has an indicator in 11.x. Green for running, red for stopped.

Yeah I'm aware of that. It is red which is why I created the thread. I hit "Start Now" and it thinks for about 2 seconds then stays in the stopped state. I thought you might be referring to the GUI showing it as stopped but is it really running. I wanted to see if there is a command that I can run to confirm this, but since I normally see "FREENAS" on my network and I can't see that, I have to assume the service is not started as the GUI suggests.

Bug report created - 25699

What is really interesting is that I installed 9.10.1 onto a new USB, booted it up, imported the RAIDZ, imported the single 4TB drive that I have, created a CIFS share and in doing so I was asked if I wanted to start the CIFS service which of course I said "Yes" to and it wouldn't start up either. I'm not sure how that is possible?
