I too would like to be able to change my signature, but I do not see a link that allows me to.

Thanks

Bob

No problem at all.

If it helps, today is my first day of logging in to the forums and posting in a few months.

Thanks

Bob

Ah I just realized...I believe it's because you need 2 likes on your posts to get promoted. It's an arbitrary value that isn't necessarily required, but I was hoping our long time users might give new users a like for useful posts and help them get promoted. I just gave you another like @BobCochran. It should auto-promote you soon. Let's see if it works!

Great. I only have one like. Anyone care to give me another like so I can add a signature?

Thanks Josh.

Crap. Now I gotta wait and see if I'm automatically promoted. I wonder how long that takes?

No problem! If you want to give other people likes that are new you can help get them promoted as well!

If you don't mind me asking, what is the rational for not allowing new members a signature?

I just went through an "interesting" experience; Having a 24bay server case shipped from a factory in China, and then cutting it up, to fit my 43cm deep electrical rack closet.
It all turned out okay, but it had me pushing my temper; and grinder :)

Just spent a little time looking for the edit signature, so I could update it, and almost went crazy :)

Guess I'll have to find something interesting to write about, so people will like me :)

I agree with @JMC. It seems a bit silly and counterproductive to turn a signature block into a privilege dependent on whether another user likes your post. There is an enormous amount of room for dislike. I've been a forum member since 2011, and only have 3 likes as of this posting. I think all forum users should have the ability to set a signature block as a normal part of their membership. Most seem to follow an unspoken convention of listing their FreeNAS system components. And that is a good thing.

Thanks for the comments everyone. The primary rationale was to prevent spam originally, but even after 2 weeks of switching to automated approvals we still haven't had a single instance of spam that I've seen, so it may be a moot point if the other security precautions are doing their job. Spam used to be a serious serious issue here, but we may be able to just relax that precaution. Let me have a look and discuss it with the admin team when I'm back in the office in the morning.

Well, dubious signatures were only really a small problem and it was a sort of grey area. I think I can count one or two people who'd fall under that category but not "obvious spammer" in the two years I've been here.

Well I'm glad to hear that. It sounds like that's something we can do away with. Thanks for filling me in on that!

You shouldn't need any likes anymore. I have relaxed that restriction on the registered user group. Give it another try and let us know if you have any issues!
