Five years of FreeNAS and these forums...

It was almost exactly five years ago that this forum was brought online.

What fun times we've had!

Good times! It's amazing how much the project has evolved in the last 5 years. For example, see this press release: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/9/prweb8830650.htm

A few observations:
So that means that you've averaged about 5 messages per day?
It looks like dru is our longest term active forum member.
Cyberjock was the most prolific member (prior to him becoming gainfully employed).
Ericloewe is most likely to be a complicated set of python scripts.

Pretty sure I wouldn't be using FreeNAS if it wasn't for the wealth of information and genuinely helpful people here, so cheers and here's to the next 5!

Started with freeNAS 8.3.0 but didn't join the forum till brought up a server at work. Figured I should contribute if and where I can, in case I have questions down the road.

It's been great watching the project grow.

I'm 8 months from the 5 year mark with FreeNAS myself. I started using it back in 8.0.4. Boy, those were the days. Every update was weeks or months in the making, and every update had major features added.

Even in those days, I could sense the frustration by the active members. Constantly having to regurgitate information that was in the manual, not providing enough information to diagnose a problem, etc. I decided I could probably help with the low hanging fruit and other topics like networking. I've been here since.

Many hands makes light work. In the early days this was a hard place to be, without enough knowledgeable people to help out answering the flood of questions. I am constantly amazed at how this has all turned out. These days, so often when I go into a thread and start to think about a reply, I scroll down and there's already a very competent, well-written reply, often even several.

I have to believe that this makes the forums a more enjoyable place for all of us, a great place to hang around with the other cool NAS geeks. ;-)

Aside from that I haven't been here too long, but am glad to have discovered these forums and FreeNas. Props to all who contribute and manage to show up and lend a helping hand day in and day out.

One amazing change for continuous availability, is mirrored boot drives.
When I looked at FreeNAS in mid 2014, it still used UFS for boot drive,
and did not easily support mirroring. So I was quite happy when ZFS
was used for the boot drive towards the end of 2014.

Even if you use something like a SATA DOM that can't be easily accessed
for hot-swap, if one of your mirrors is still good, your NAS stays up and
running. (Plus, if desperate to restore mirroring, you could add an external
USB drive...)

I have to believe that this makes the forums a more enjoyable place for all of us, a great place to hang around with the other cool NAS geeks. ;-)

Dead on the reason why I keep posting and helping out to the best of my ability.
The general spirit/tone on the forum is lovely to see, and to be part of.

Another aspect the FreeNAS Forum thrives upon is the ability of <many> users to know their limits in terms of recommendations.
To my experience, that level of awareness and respect is unprecedented comparing to other forums.

Might be because we kinda tend to jump on the bad responses and correct them. ;-)
