Hello, this is my first FreeNas ZFS build and I am wondering what type of ECC RAM I should buy.

I bought a Dell PowerEdge T20.
It came with:

CPU: Xeon CPU E3-1225 v3
Mobo: Dell version A07
Integrated GPU: Intel HD P4600
Socket: Intel Socket 1150
Memory support: DDR3, DDR4
RAM: Hynix/Hyundai 4096 MB DDR3 1600MHz ECC CL11

The mobo has 4 slots, still not sure if I should go 4x4GB or 4x8GB.
I wouldn't need to store more that 16TB of data on this server.

Should I just buy 3 more sticks of the Hynix memory?
If not, how do I figure out what type of ECC RAM will work with this mobo and ZFS?

Thanks

Get 8GB sticks. One day you'll want more than 16GB, and this way you won't end up with surplus 4GB sticks.
Check on crucial.com for the exact models.
This is the safest option.

I lucked out on a Best Offer listing on eBay - the RAM turned out to be Hynix.

EDIT: I would post a link but the listing seems to be long gone.

Yeah, your best choice by far is to use a memory manufacturer's compatibility tool to guide you.

As long it's not Kingston's compatibility tool -- see my sig.

Quite frankly, the whole Kingston thing was crappy, and I've no problem with you blacklisting them, but the advice is still correct, even for Kingston. The best thing you can do is to use the tool. It prevents so many kinds of stupid mistakes.
