decided to try my hand at building a NAS. I currently got 8.5 TB installed into my desktop but that is full of anime, movies, etc. My goal is to add storage over time and wanted to know if this was an OK build. Im trying to get the most future storage capacity for the cheapest price.

I want to use caviar green because they are cheap, or is it really worth my money to spring for the caviar red. money is not so much an issue if i get a significant performance boost 20%+, also is dual core cpu fine or should i bump it up to quad. i will mostly be using this to stream on PS3 Media Server, torrenting and general storage. i plan on buying a 3TB drive every 3-6 months till i max out the capacity, along with ram to compensate.

What are your recommendations if this is not good enough. Thanks.

First, you need to do more reading. Normally ECC RAM is virtually a requirement if you want ZFS to protect your data. If you want to use non-ECC, that's your gamble. But expect that if your RAM goes bad your pool will be trashed.

Second, you need to do more reading. You can't add single disk drives to a zpool without losing redundancy. See the presentation in my sig and you'll understand.

Third, don't buy the cheapest stuff you can find. Cheap also means corners were cut. And you don't want to be the next statistic on this forum to lose your data because you went cheap and didn't go smart. Read the stickies. Just about everything that people do wrong regularly is discussed in the stickies.

As for hard drives, that's totally based on your own reading, research, and opinions. I use Greens, others use Reds.
