Hello,

I'm about to purchase the following build.
Do you have suggestions?
Does the motherboard needs a BIOS update for the processor ?

The purpose is to build a home NAS for :
- Precious data
- OwnCloud
- VirtualBox (Windows VM for iTunes server)
- Probably Plex

Supermicro MBD-X10SLL-F-O
Intel BX80646E31225V3 XEON E3-1225v3
16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered ECC 1.5V 1024Meg x 72 CT4485022
Fractal Design Define mini
Seasonic G-360 80PLUS Gold
Eaton EL650USBFR Ellipse Eco PSU

Thanks in advance,
François

How many drives? There was some discussion a few days ago about psu load and what is the right amount for X drives and y psu rating. Personally I'd feel more comfortable with a little more overhead in the psu to make all the parts happy. I'd go with 450W.

The 95W are probably a mistake. Haswell non-EP/EX tops out at 84W, up from Ivy Bridge's 77W.

And I've got 2x E3-1225 v3 running here, even with BOINC (world community grid) I've never seen spiking the readings above 50W for the CPU+RAM+IGP. A single system with 2x7200rpm HDDs and 2x4GB RAM uses 30W in idle and 70W under full BOINC load, measured with an APC Back-UPS Pro 900VA.

For that board however you should rather pick the E3-1220 v3 - doesn't have a graphics chipset integrated, but the board has a dedicated graphics chipset onboard anyway.

BIOS updates are only needed for Xeon E3's ending in a 1 or 6 as model number - altough most boards come with the proper bios already.

I plan to use 5 disk in a RaidZ2.
I am a little surprised about what you're saying.
I was told before that a 360W PSU was more than enough for this configuration. Can you please explain why you propose a 450W PSU?
Thanks

.

Why is the E3-1220v3 better than the E3-1225v3? It's the same price and seems more recent.

it's the same age. integrated graphics or not is the only difference.

Yes, 360W is more than enough, even for a Xeon E3 system, as long as you don't throw in >6 HDDs in the mix. Some people don't know how to do numbers.

Yeah, that thread got pretty nasty really quick. I still like the extra overhead plus the option of adding more disks later without having to replace the psu.

RAIDZ2 needs to be in an even number disks. Well, I can't find it in the new docs but the old docs suggest "Start a RAIDZ2 at 4, 6, or 10 disks."

Either do it properly with a 360W (which leaves 20-50% overhead) or go overboard with a 700+W PSU and at least 60A on the 12V rail.

Ok, I'll go with the 450W version of the seasonic gold PSU. It's about 20€ more.

My concern is about the even number of disks in a Z2 array. I wanted to keep a spare SATA port for a backup disk that I can store offsite...

Actually if you use compression, and it's enabled by default so you'll probably use it, this rule isn't valid anymore (at least for the perfs; you might lose some space by using the wrong number of drives) so don't worry too much ;)
