Double checking this hardware before I proceed

I figured I'd save myself some time(and a headache) and check with here before I move on with this build.

So after I my last failed attempt with a Lenovo TS430(the lenovo bios can go diaf), I went ahead and read all of the stickies and post to put together a recommended spec'd system.

Then I came to x3250 m5(moving everything to the "cloud" and this was the first decom). It's your basic E3-1220 v3, 32GB, server. Being that it's the 3.5 version, it's only got 4 bays. So this is where the doublechecking and the need for validation comes in.

First, the x3250, FreeNAS should run ok on it right? I mean, I'll at the very least be able to get it to boot this time right(lenovo bios(es) suck). Second, I was originally planning on building something with the E3-1231 v3. The 1220 is just slightly slower, but lacks the hyper-threading so it has 4 less cores. For those currently running FreeNAS, is this going to be noticeable difference for running your typical Plex/Transmission file server?

Now onto the major reason for the NAS, storage. Obviously, 4 drive bays aren't going to cut it, but I can purchase a SA120 DAS to add 12 bays. The main worry I have with the sa120 is the fact that I'd like to use 3.5 SATA drives(already have 4TB nas drives purchased). After a bit of googlefu, I've come across info that it is possible, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this item since it's relatively cheap right now.

I could still go the build route, but if the x3250 + sa120 combo can work, I can get more drives/space with the $$$ instead. If you were in my position, what would you do?

Oh and if anyone has gone this route, additional recommendations, whether it be hardware or setup, would be greatly appreciated.

Edit--

According to the documentation for the SA120, this is a lists that shows up for System x servers that support each of the supported RAID adapters.

LSI 9286CV-8e PCIe 6Gb 8-port
ServeRAID M5120 RAID adapter
ServeRAID M5225-2GB

I have read of a few options besides those, including the SAS9200-8E, that works.

It looks like some have also used a SFF-8087 Internal to SFF-8088 External Mini SAS card connected to a IBM M1015 RAID.

Getting your hands on a M1015 is a lot more safe bet than your typical raid cards (more on that topic can be found in the newbie guide on hardware).

I currently already have one that I was going to use when I thought I could load FreeNAS on a TS430. I'm just wondering if I should proceed with x3250. Don't want to run into any installation issues.

As long as you use a HBA with ext interface instead of a raid adapter you should be fine.
You can always spec up the CPU if you need it...

Depending on the pci-e slots things might get a bit hairy though... you'll need to check connectivity thoroughly

Edit: After some further reading there seem to be compatibility issues with some non-Lenovo disks ...
so better read up some more before deciding...

Edit2: I see on the other forum you found that thread;)

Btw, anyone familiar with the HBA/Raid cards with the ability to flash to IT mode. Are any of these able to be flashed to IT mode?

LSI 9286CV-8e PCIe 6Gb 8-port
ServeRAID M5120 RAID adapter
ServeRAID M5225-2GB

Or does anyone know if there is an IBM M1015 RAID based card with an external connector?
