How can I disable the redundant power supply on a 4-node Supermicro X8? Mainly I am trying to lower my power consumption and I realised that with two nodes up I consume 2x ~150W and I know that each of the two power supplies are rated 1400W. My impression is that most of this is wasted due to the too powerful supply. Disabling one of them should cut the electricity bill quite well, I do not really care about about a potential failrue.

You might get some small improvement, but I'm not sure you can expect major improvements from an X8 system.

In any case, IPMI might have an option to manage this. I'm not sure how it would work in a 4-node chassis - it could be that you can use any of the nodes' IPMI functionality or the chassis itself might have an IPMI controller you can directly connect to.

Simply removing or unplugging one of them should do the trick--though I doubt it would help you much. Supermicro PSUs are typically pretty efficient, even at low loads.
