Data transfer speed over GB LAN

So I set up a new box today and my throughput is ok but not great. As a test I copied a 2 GB directory of pics from the NAS to my laptop. I was hitting about 25 MB/s on average but would hit points where it would drop to 1.5 MB/s. I was hitting about the same numbers both wired and wireless (ac). When I was running my server I was hitting greater than 80MB/s. Thoughts??

Well I think I found my own answer. I went back on my desktop and transferred a single 2.5 GB video file and my rates were 113MB/s read and 106MB/s write. Now I think the speed reduction was because the drive I am copying from is just an SSD connected directly to my router via USB3. LOL not a smart way to do it.
