Hello,

I'm looking into switching from my Synology (8Bay System) to FreeNAS (Board: Supermicro X10SL7-F with 8 or more disks). I currently have 30TB in my Synology and it's nearly 100% used. The system is comprised out of 3 and 5 TB drives. What I'm looking at is the best possible way to get the data migrated to FreeNAS without buying too much (already ordered 2x8TB drives) new Drives. But also having a FreeNAS setup with redundancy and not much loss due to parity.

Open for suggestions and ideas.

Thanks
D.

You have 5x3TB and 3x5TB drives? And 2x8TB in the mail?
Are you planning zfs? What level?
You really don't want to lose all that data, so trying to be nimble around parity as you repurpose drives is not worth the risk.
I would build out the FreeNAS system with 6x8TB more new drives and do 8 drive RAID-Z2, then sell the old drives once you're happy with FreeNAS.

You would definitely need somewhere to store the data in the middle of this if you don't set-up your NAS box initially with 30TB+. Sounds like you would need at the very least 6x8TB drives in RaidZ2 in order to be able to store the whole Synology system in it, then add new vDevs with the old Synology drives that also have redundancy. I don't think there's a near practical way to just move the drives to a new box and call it a day that just won't work.
