Hi all,

I have a old Acer aspire laptop that i am using. I have used it as a media server (windows with dlna software) to share movies and music to my smart tv, xbox and other laptops throughout the house. The dlna kept on crashing after a couple of days, so i looked for something new and came across freeNAS.

Now i did go through a couple of "how to" and installation guides, but here is my problem (witch i dont really know if it IS a problem)
I created a bootable flash drive and inserted it. (with FreeNAS 8.3.1)
It booted fine and whent through everything.
It gets to the part with the freeNAS logo (with 4 options i think) and then before i even get a chance to select anything it goes on right to the end. Displaying the menu with 11 options and the IP address.

MEANING, i did not setup any of my storage devices as i saw should be done on all the "how to guides".
Now a headed over to the IP and thought i might be able to attach the storage devices from there. When to storage - attach storage - selected the storage and gave it a name. It displayed the available space and name after adding.

Now i went to share (in order to map the drive on my PC) But there is no way to browse for the path. I only get "/" so i tried to type the path "/mnt/flash/" and also tried other variations with the path typed.
I kept on getting the error:
  • The path must reside within a volume mount point

That was yesterday. This morning i thought i would give it a another go. When i go to the storage tab i get the error:
Error getting available space

I tried adding a other storage device and got the same error.

Now i know I have probable setup the entire thing incorrectly??? How should i do it? Is there a way i can reset it? Why did it not stop at the menu during installation?

It sounds like the guides you are referring to are for an older version of FreeNAS. Instead, refer to the User Guide for your version--download the correct version from http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Main_Page. Section 3.1 Quick Start Guide provides an overview with links to the part of the docs with the specific details.

Thanks alot!!! Got it working!

But now i ran into a other problem.
I started by adding a oldish 200GB and 1TB drive. Set them up and shared (separately, 200GB as backups. And 1TB as Media) I can find them under network on my computer, and changed all the permissions for both of them.
I installed minildna and started coping a couple of movies from my 2TB witch i use with my TV. After 10 or so movies the NAS froze. I could not go to its IP or open it under my networks in my computer. So i restated it, only to have the same problem 5min later. What can this be.

The laptop that iam using is a duelcore 1.6ghz with 2GB of RAM. I know it is not a lot, but should work??

Any thoughts?
