Could accessing the server during a boot scrub generate I/O errors?

I am getting occasional I/O errors on a USB drive. It appears that today, the error showed up when I attempted to access the dashboard during a boot drive scrub. I can access all the shares no problem. But, I can't use much on the dashboard (shell wont open). I tried to do a reboot to see if that would resolve anything. But, it warns that a scrub is taking place so I canceled (I checked the disks panel and it doesn't indicate a scrub on those drives).

So, I'm wondering if trying to access FreeNAS during a boot drive scrub could cause it to lock up and throw I/O errors like this?

It shouldn't. I do nightly scrubs of my boot device (testing an unrelated theory) and I've definitely used the box during scrubs without problems.

Got it. Thank you. I just tried to reboot and it froze. Hard reset and the thing is toast. I think it's just a bad USB drive.
