Hurray. Build!

I needed to scope out something to augment my existing NAS (free up ports) on a SM H8SCM/Opteron 4234 system and the emphasis here is power efficiency / sound output over performance. Pure storage (No plugins/jails). Will end up running 2x gige w/ LACP and a 3rd single link line. Primary use will be AFP, NFS and SMB. Media, some storage for VMs and backups.

MOBO : SuperMicro A1SAM-2550F-O
RAM : 4x Kingston 8GB ECC Unbuf DDR3 1600 1.35v RAM
CASE : Fractal Design FD-CA-NODE-804-BL Case
HDD : all existing drives; 6x Seagate ST4000VN000 4TB and Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB + Crucial M4 128 as L2ARC.
HBA : M1015 / LSI IT etc.
POWER : Spare Antec 450 (for now).
on 6.3 Stable.

Thoughts?

  • L2ARC with 32GB of RAM is a fool's errand.
  • Avoid Kingston whenever possible.
  • In that huge case, consider an ASRock E3C224D4I-14S or a Supermicro X10SL7-F, if you're going to use an HBA. Idle power won't be much different. Avoton's only real advantage is support for 16GB DIMMs - but those are expensive enough for a Xeon E5 system to be cheaper.

I'd prefer the following build for up to 10 bays:

LianLi PC-Q26, Seasonic G-450, ASrock E3C224D4I-14S, any Socket 1150 CPU except Core i5/i7, 1-2 Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B kits, 4x LianLi BP2SATA (1 included) for enabling hotswap on 2 bays per.

The energy usage isn't that much different. but you'll get far more performance when you need it.

If you stick to that huge 804 battleship, there are mATX Avoton boards around from supermicro which support full size DIMMs.
