CIFS shares & OS X - Make shares searchable?

Using FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201509282017

We use CIFS shares.

The clients are Windows & OS X.

I've noticed that on the Windows machine, the shares behave perfectly : shadow copies are browsable, content is searchable, etc.

I think the shadow copies will never be accessible on OS X, which I don't mind so much.

But what's very bothering is that the CIFS shares are not searchable (in OS X Finder).

Is there anything that can be done about that?

Spotlight support was added in samba 4.3.0. Freenas 9.3.1 is on 4.1.19 (I think). Upgrade to samba 4.3.x won't happen till freenas 10.

I think many people use 3rd party apps to search samba shares on their macs because of these issues.

Haven't taken a look at spotlight support in 9.10 yet, but I believe that spotlight support is a compile-time option (not an smb.conf parameter) and it requires the gnome-tracker package to be installed.
