I have a HP Microserver Gen8 which is almost as loud as Heathrow airport.

I have modified the server by replacing the original fan with a Corsair SP120 however it is still loud. I have upgraded to the latest BIOS and firmware as well.

Is there a command to manage the fan speeed in FreeNAS

Heathrow airport called. They are offended by your remarks!

You *might* be able to control it with ipmitool (search the forums for a guide for Supermicro boards). But more than likely the answer is no. Ideally there should be a setting in your BIOS, and that's likely all you'll have to choose from since HP likely has its own proprietary tools (there may or may not be FreeBSD compatible version too).

Unfortunately this is likely to be an example of why I don't recommend people use OEM stuff for FreeNAS. :(

In case there really is no setting for fan speed control:
Try for a RMA, from my experience HP is far nicer than Dell regarding replacing stuff. You can probably just ask for a new mobo as advanced replacement. If the new mobo (new, blank firmware etc) didn't help, look if the PSU fan is at fault.

Here is the best post I've seen on it. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1377-page8.html. This is a well known issue, if you don't use the integrated controller in raid mode, basically the server can't do anything but default to "safe noisy". It (Ilo) is also kind enough to screw you if you try and mess with the rpms physically and will shut the server down. Blech. One of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

LOL. Bullshit. Really? It's a fsckn link with a pointer to a few hundred people with the problem. Don't know or care who's deaf. How bout we RMA the fkn server mobo for a known design issue. That makes sense.

Perhaps the dude on silentpc is wrong. Couldn't care less. It is however useful for OP to know there are literally thousands of folks in his shoes. Regardless of who is on irc. Have a nice day.

I guess you're just pissed because he didn't pay five times the price for a FreeNAS Mini - which also had issues along the way, but we'll gloss over that.

It's also interesting how fast you get from "few hundred" to "thousands". I'm even less tempted to read the link now, especially since I've never read about such a problem and we've discussed the Gen8 as FreeNAS more than once with multiple owners (i.e. FreeNAS users) present.

Why would I care what he buys. If there are 134 posts about the issue, and HP even addressed it via an advisory. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c04226727 It is pretty safe to assume the problem was acknowledged and widespread. Thus my jump to thousands. That is definitely a HUGE stretch </sarcasm>

Looked to me like HP fixed it. But OP says he is on the latest and greatest.

I do in fact get pissed when someone posts, bullshit, after a pointer to good information on a widespread problem.

Calm down gents. I've read this thread 3 times and I don't even understand where the hostility came from.

I'm just a cranky old dude that doesn't appreciate getting cussed at for providing relevant information. Been deleting many keystrokes of true hostility.
