I am so excited about freenas 8. I tried to boot from CD and usb.. both didn't work.

I am trying to use it in a work environment on an Intel storage unit with 14 terabytes hard disks.

your help is greatly appreciated.

that hardware description is pretty vague.

are you sure the hardware is actually supported?

and none of those are FreeBSD.

how did you burn the iso?

I burned the image with IMG burn @ 1x write speed. And I tested it on an old computer, and it booted.

The first Hard Disk in the NAS is not clean, it has a CentOS installed on it. Perhaps formatting the drive with a system rescue CD might help to pass the first boot steps? And if I format, which filesystem would you recommend? ext3?

I am also thinking about injecting the first Hard Disk with the ISO image the same way I did with the USB thumb drive. What do you think?

Problem fixed with following steps:

FIRST OF ALL:
1. Power up storage unit and press 3 to go into 3ware controller settings.
2. Make an array of a single drive (first drive) with "Export to JBOD = Yes".

THEN:
1. Shutdown storage unit. Cut off power.
2. Remove first hard disk (where FreeNas OS will be installed).
3. Connect naked hard-disk with a second computer through a SATA to USB adapter.
4. Boot FreeNas with the second computer from the CD-ROM.
5. Choose to install FreeNas on the external hard-disk attached through USB.
6. Shutdown computer after installation is finished.
7. Re-attach Hard disk into the storage unit while it is still without power.
8. Power up Storage unit.
9. Set BIOS to boot from specified hard disk.

Anytime,
Arto
