I am new to FreeNAS and NFS. I've installed FreeNAS successfully. The Pool/Volume and shares are setup and my Vmware ESXi host can see the FreeNAS volume as a DataStore. However, I am unable to save my VMs to this volume. What am I doing wrong? Is it a permissioning issue?

Hard to tell as you've given us zero information about your hardware or configuration.

My FreeNAS 9.3 installation is on a Dell PowerEdge 840 server, 4GB RAM, mirrored 64GB drives. USB being used to boot. When I try to create a VM on my ESXi6 host server, I get this message:

Error created by file /vmfs/volumes/....../(vm name)

You are going to have a rough time when your hardware isn't good enough to run freenas. I'm not even going to mention anything about the vm workflow on top of that.

Trying to keep it on topic, what is your configuration? Who owns the dataset, who mounted the NFS export, what version of NFS? Remember you have to describe the problem if you want help. For all I know you forgot to plug in the Ethernet cable.
