Can I put a Blu-Ray drive in my NAS and share it over network?

As the title says, is it possible to have an internal SATA Blu-Ray drive in a FreeNAS system and share that as a volume over the network? Wanted to know this before I go buying an external Bly-Ray drive, in case it isn't needed.

No, while you could potentially do such a thing, FreeNAS lacks the structure necessary to do that.

HDCP most likely wouldn't be transmitted over network and you end up with a black screen on the TV :(

HDCP is irrelevant if you're just reading a bitstream off the disc over the network. HDCP would come into play after decoding/decrypting, which would be done on the client.
Better yet, fsck copy protection mechanisms that only serve to irritate legitimate users.

Don't forget the part where they employ the shittiest DRM mechanisms solely for the purpose of criminalizing legitimate end-user behavior. (like ripping a DVD you purchased) :/

No, they're effectively waging a long battle to de-legitimize things that have traditionally fallen under fair use. They want your content to be licensed to you, and they remember fondly the good old days when they could sell you multiple copies of media as technology changed. Think about how things progressed from vinyl records to 8 track to cassette tape to CD, and how many people ended up re-purchasing at least part of their music collection (and doing so album-style, not just single-song style). Or about how you might re-buy something when you scratched a record. Ultimately I suspect what they'd really like is a licensing model where you would pay a micropayment of some sort each time you enjoyed a song.

What's happening instead is that they're raising a generation of people who have total disdain for the legacy distribution model, and who are no longer all that interested in owning their own media collection.

You messed up your [ QUOTE ] tags. It's the sort of behavior we'd expect from a noob with less than 300 posts.

Oh, is this a game of pummel-the-n00b? Because I would point out that it doesn't take that much effort to eyeball your post after you make it! (heh now he's gonna bust me every time I tyop).
