CAM status: CCBrequest completed with an error

FreeNAS web GUI & network shares are inaccessible and the following messages appear on the monitor:

(da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): READ(10). CDB: 28 00 00 36 05 21 00 00 80 00
(da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): CAM status: CCBrequest completed with an error
(da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Retrying command


This message repeats then displays:
Error 5, Retries exhausted

This sequence of messages continually repeats. The hex number in the first line changes slightly.

Before making this post, I searched the forum for this and similar errors. Based on my research, I assume that anyone who answers my plea for help is going to tell me to toss my boot drive and reinstall on a new device and that there's nothing I can do to troubleshoot and/or fix the problem.

Knowing this, I still decided to post anyway because I'm hoping someone can tell me the cause of the error, and more importantly, how to prevent it in the future. This will be the 3rd boot drive I've had to replace in the past year (2nd this calendar year) with same error. This happens randomly with no warning, I've not made any significant configuration changes or restarted the system. I've had one Silicon Power Touch T01 Mini 32GB and two Sandisk Cruzers (last was the Fit 32GB). I prefer small profile USB drives that won't accidentally get bumped sticking out of the back of the computer. Are these types of drives known to be incompatible with FreeNAS or am I just unlucky? Is there a recommended brand of USB drive?
