I was mucking about in my server case, rerouting some cables. When I was done, I booted. unfortunately, one of my two drives wasn't plugged in. So yup, it comes up and tells me about the bad drive. I shut everything down, made sure the drive was plugged in (D'oh), and it booted fine, and I see no MORE errors.
It never resilvered or anything like that. I think it is highly unlikely that anything even got out of sync (possibly a date/time in a log file or something like that).

I issued a zfs clear, and everything appears happy.
So what is the correct behavior the next time it happens? run a scrub? zfs clear? or ????

All disks are now available so this is no longer an issue. You can run a scrub manually to make sure you've not caused any issues, but the chances of that are slim.

If you check zpool status, it should indicate that it repaired or resilvered a very small amount of data. It is automatic, and takes only as long as the amount of changed data. For more severe incidents, it may start a metadata scan to look for changes. If it doesn't show the repaired message, possibly some other command already ran that replaced that message.
