Hi there,

my question is more or less already in the title.

For which of the 2 processors should I be going?

The server will be used as datadump, for backups and I´m going to stream from it.
It should be able to handle at least 2 streams at the same time.

I´m going to run around 10 disks in it, 4TB each.

Will the C2550 be enough ?

Thank you all in advance

Any streaming warrants the C2750 CPU.

Be aware that the ASRock C2750D4I only has 6 SATA ports working well with FreeNAS.

Oh ok, I didn´t know that about the Sata Ports.

I wasn´t able to find any other boards with more SATA ports, do you have any suggestions?

Or should I be going for a i3 4130T or an ivy bridge i3?

Is the compatibility better there?

That kinda ruins my plan... because I need those SATA ports.

That means I´ll have to plan for a PCI card with a few mini SAS connectors

For a nice-looking small system I'd recommend:
LianLi PC-Q26
Seasonic G-450
ASRock E3C224D4I-14S
Core i3-4160
2x Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B
4x BP2SATA Backplanes (not neccessary, direct cabling is possible as well)

TDP of the CPU doesn't matter since it'll idle most of the time. The only thing the T variant does is limiting the clock speeds to lower values which could bring plex issues.
Other CPU choices would be Xeon E3-1220 v3 or E3-1241 v3.

Regarding the Asrock having only 6 "good" ports, I am working with Asrock to resolve the issue. I don't have an ETA, but I am working with them internally to hopefully resolve the issues.

Thanks to you both for the input.
That AsRock Board is a beast wow.

But I´m limited to Micro ATX or Mini ITX sadly?
Any suggestions here?

Any reason why you´re recommending the Crucial RAM not the cheaper Kingston?
I thought the problems are only regarding the Supermicro X10 boards?

Ok, I think I´ll go with the Supermicro X10SL7-F.

1 more question here, what´s the difference between the Supermicro X10SL7-F-O and the Supermicro X10SL7-F-B?

B is 10€ more expensive

Ah, and is the i3 powerfull enough for 2 streams?
Because with only 2 cores it shouldn´t be as strong with multithreading?

My plan for now is the following:

Intel Core i3-4160, 2x 3.60GHz
Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B
Supermicro X10SL7-F retail
Corsair RM Series RM450

All in a Fractal Node 804

The 804 is quite the battleship. I wouldn't pick that one... You can still throw the C2750D4I or the E3C224D4I-14S into bigger chassis. You are not limited to ITX chassis. But alast, what's the point of a small board in a big chassis... If you are going to build big, why not pick a bigger chassis which is closer to standard tower dimensions like these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147233

Ok, with the supermicro board I´m going for the curcial RAM.

The reason I was set on the Node 804 is because it doesn´t look outright like a PC and it fits nicely in the livingroom.

I can fit about 10 drives in there which is good for me.

Is there a reason why you wouldn´t buy it?

And again, the i3 4160 is enough right?

That is pretty much identical to what I am building in the next few weeks.

What´s with this RAM here:

CT2KIT51272BD160B

I´m asking becasue I can get the 8GB Kit for 52€ , so it would be cheaper to buy 2 of those.

At 16GB RAM total for a 32TB pool FreeNAS' performance will suck quite badly. Get 8GB DIMMs. Nobody wants 4GB anymore.
