Hello,
Specs on the FreeNAS box:
FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201501241715
i3 4370
16GB DDR3 1866 not ECC
WD Red 4TB
MSI Z87m gaming
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on the device to backup. I do have access to the share and have confirmed that I can make changes to the shares from Explorer (and they register, checked via shell).
When I do try to setup the backup I get this error message.
This problem started on an older version of FreeNAS, the one that prevents the ability to upgrade because of issues with mounting or whatever it is. Nothing I did seemed to fix it so I assumed it was just something that'd fix itself once I reinstall a newer version of FreeNAS (since I had issues with AFP as well).
But, no. I've tried doing whatever I can to minimize the number of ways I deviate from the FreeNAS CIFS setup on youtube to the point that it's almost exactly alike (a couple different names) but it still gives me that error.
Edit: Windows Backup has a service. That doesn't start when something like, oh, say Windows Backup is open.
Microsoft, you're killing me.
So, the solution...

Remote Procedural Call (RPC) -> automatic
COM+ Event system -> automatic
System Event Notification Service -> automatic
Volume Shadow Copy -> automatic
Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider -> automatic
Block Level Backup Engine Service -> automatic
And most importantly!
Windows Backup -> Automatic
