Hello! I'm running FreeNAS 11.2-U6 on an
HP DL380 Gen 7
with 2x Xeon E5620 @ 2.40GHz,
16gb DDR3 ECC,
and 3 decommissioned laptop drives I've taken out of various systems over the years. I can't recall exact model numbers, but here's similar drives (if not them exactly)
  1. 80GB Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00 SATA
  2. WD3000BPVT 320gb SATA
  3. Some 250gb Xbox 360 slim hard drive, WD I believe.
I am attempting to install the VM to the 320gb drive, and FreeNAS runs on the 80gb drive. The Xbox drive is being used as general storage, and has presented no issues.

The issue I run into is encountered whenever I attempt to install the most recent (as of 2 days ago) Ubuntu 19.04 live server iso for 64 bit machines. Installation seems to go fine, and all steps are indicated as completed by the installer, giving me the prompt to remove the installation media and reboot.

From there, I delete the CDROM device of the VM, and press enter on the VNC in order to reboot the VM. After booting back up, I am showed the Grub screen, with only options to install Ubuntu server, install for OEM use, and do disk check. I have also tried this without deleting the CDROM device, but have had no success thus far.

This issue does not seem apparent with Fedora Server, though I haven't tried any other operating systems thus far due to an incredibly slow home internet connection that would take overnight to download any files over 700~ MB or so.

Has anyone ran into this issue? About 3 weeks ago, this worked fine, and I have had 2 VMs running for about 1.5~2 months without issue, and was forced to reinstall them due to a power loss.

I have also used a brand new, clean install version of FreeNAS downloaded earlier in the week, and have wiped every single drive of all data, and made new pools for the 2 usable drives.

Any help is appreciated, and more details are available upon request!
(Sorry if I've made this help request wrong. I took a brief skim over others, and gave the most information I could sensibly give)

I had the same loop which is why I ended up here but I have managed to do this. This is what I did.
TrueNas Core and Ubuntu 12

Run the Ubuntu install till you reach the black screen with 'Installation complete' and the 'Reboot Now' option at the bottom.
Delete the iso installation image from the CDROM
Go to TrueNAS.
Delete the virtual CDROM and then also stop the Virtual Machine. It was not keen on stopping and I had to use the force tickbox and click it a couple of times if I remember rightly. But eventually the virtual machine stopped.
Now back to Ubuntu install and Reboot Now. On the noVNC screen click on Connect.
The connect fails and you get a red banner message at top of screen.

Now restart the virtual machine in TrueNAS and then click Connect again on the noVNC screen.
It worked for me.

I have only had a server (Dell Poweredge R720) for a week and would not have stood a chance of getting things working without the generous answers on the internet from fellow users so this is my first post and I hope it helps you or someone else in the future.

Good luck.
