I was reading a review of this board and thought this looked like it might make for a cool board in a FreeNAS/Plex server that I am thinking about building.

I priced it out on Newegg and it runs $400. For $400, I can get a nice Supremicro MBD-X10SLL-F-O ($170) and a quad core it-4590 ($185). $355 compared to $400.

I can't imagine that the atom processors even eight of them will do as well as an i5 quad.

Am I looking at this right?

An i5 doesn't support ECC. A C2750 does.

Oops, I forgot about that, I picked the wrong processor for my comparison. What about this:

ASRock C2750D4I Mini ITX Server Motherboard FCBGA1283 $400

Supremicro MBD-X10SLL-F-O ($170) and a quad core it-4590 ($185).
Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell 3.1GHz LGA 1150 80W Server Processor BX80646E31220V3 ($205)
$390

That is a really close price point comparison, they both support ECC. Which would be better for a FreeNAS/Plex server?

I think the E3 setup offers more bang for the buck, particularly given the additional motherboard flexibility it provides.

The Avoton boards offer good performance (much better than previous Atom generations) and low power consumption, but they're expensive, especially for the computing power present. The C2750 shows a passmark of 3874, the E3-1220v3 gives 6600. If low power consumption is essential for you, the Avoton may be a good choice; otherwise, IMO, they're too expensive for the performance.

Yeah, I don't care that much about power consumption. I heat my house with electricity and the difference between these two mobos is probably nothing compared to that.

That answered my question.

I was curious about the passmark scores and looked up my current Windows 7 workstation processor, and it still smokes even after nearly 4 years.
