like many, my freenas setup is a home media server

I share some access to my media on a read only basis with others via ftp

but , of course I only want them to be able to see the media area of my nas which is under /mnt/Olympic/Media

as such, the appropriate thing would be to have the proftpd defaultroot (i.e. the "Always chroot" freenas option) to have an extra option to allow the chroot dir to be specified as a location other than user home (~) , for instance in my case I'd set it to be /mnt/Olympic/Media

I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to be able to share an area on their freenas system with others by ftp without exposing their whole system?

I think it will work if you use /mnt/Olympic/Media as each user's home directory (i.e. follow the instructions in the Guide but do not create a separate dataset for each user).

sure, but the problem with that is that it would litter the whole /mnt/Olympic/Media area with their home profile data
