Hi,

I've got a Freenas 8 virtual machine running on ESX server. Freenas boots from USB, has got access to SSD drive where I store all VMs and there are four 2TB HDDs for data. Those 4 HDDs are in raid z.

There was a power cut and after that I cannot see any files anymore. To be honest I've got no clue how to fix this (if it can be fixed at all) and I'm hoping someone here will be able to help.

I've attached the screenshots of output of various commands to help to diagnose the problem and find some solution.

Also, links to the screenshots on imgur:

Let me know if you need any more information.

Thank you in advance.

I'm confused. You have a ESX server with 4 disks containing your VM files (and ESXi files I suppose).
You created a VM for freenas, but instead of creating a virtual drive for OS you installed it into a physical USB flash?

I guess it was no such a good idea to virtualize freenas...
It cannot find any metadata in the disks about ZFS.. not sure where to go from here... perhaps the file your export on how you export the disks from vmware got corrupted...

I have some virtual installations, in small environnement.
I find this solution very usefull and economic. I usually create a VM with a small vdisk (4-8GB) for OS and a bigger vdisk for storage. this will be the production server, in wich users store shared files and folders. ESXi server already has a redundant system of disk , so I just create a single simple ZFS volume with a single virtual disk.
In addition I usually setup a physical dedicated freenas machine with redundant disk system for backup all data, including virtual nas. Usign this just as a backup station I dont need very hard performance, so it can be a very cheap solution with high performance and affidability
