I have thrown together this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/mlMG.

However, I am trying to save money! Can anyone give advice on CPU and memory choice? I’m not sure whether I will benefit much from a CPU with higher cache (3MB as opposed to 1.5MB). Do I need 4GB of RAM, or will 2GB be okay? Will I risk bottlenecking read/write speeds in any way?

I will be using the NAS for media storage of up to 1TB (RAID 1 on 2x 1TB HDD), and backups of my Mac’s SSD.

Appreciate any advice!

I would get
- more RAM, a cheap 8GB KIT corsair value (2x4GB)
- 1,5 or 2TB drives (they are cheaper per GB/£ )

Also i think your is a little PSU is oversized, since i'm running Intel Core i3 530 2.93GHz 4MB 73W, intel DH55tc, 6x 2TB WD20EARS/X, 2x 3in3 Hotswap Cages with a 300W Be Quiet (80 PLUS).
The PSU is over 2 years old and keeping the system perfectly alive.
(Currently running a scrub with a load of 0.34, 0.45, 0.52)

Thanks for your reply. Upgraded storage to 2x 1.5TB HDD: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mmrZ

Do I need extra RAM? My needs are pretty basic – RAID 1 with 1.5TB. Bear in mind, this is a budget build.

The PSU was the cheapest I would find!
