I am using a old eMachine to host my FreeNAS v 9.2x on 2 GB RAM. It is only for test.
Am I to believe that I cannot run 9.3 on this box?
I am not using ZFS as I know I would need much more RAM.

So, do I try to upgrade to 9.3 or will it break?

8GB is pretty minimal and on the low-end as far as modern hardware goes. FreeNAS is a modern server OS for modern server hardware and realistic budgets. It's not for recycling old desktop hardware.

I'm surprised you're even operational with 2GB, but using UFS is probably saving your butt there somewhat. Consider each hour of uptime a gift.

Actually, it works like a charm. Both my laptop and desktop have easy/quick access to files. File transfers are very fast. It works much better than MS Win 8 HomeGroup. Very impressive product. Eventually, I will have real hardware.

I've personally done Teamviewer sessions with people (volunteering on my own time) only to find that with 6GB of RAM (and some with 4GB of RAM) don't work right. In fact, we've got a few cases where 8GB of RAM and the Plex Plugin won't work.

So yeah, the 8GB minimum is dead serious. The reality is that if you want a server that can do *everything* you want (aka use all the plugins and jails available) then you're really wanting 12GB+.
