8TB Pool degraded

Hi, so i been running FreeNAS now for a few weeks, and recently my 8TB pool is constantly degraded.

I scrub, and import and its ok for a while and after a while it's degraded again.

I am running freenas as a proxmox vm with 8GB of RAM.
I realise that i should be using a lot more RAM, can that be the issue?

i am using a microserver gen 8, that can take maximum 16GB of RAM.
i dont mind buying another 8, but want to make sure it'll resolve my issues (and preferably have 4GB free for other vm's).

1. Running FreeNAS in a VM is not recommended.

2. Doubtful the problem is the amount of RAM you have.

3. If you only have 8G of RAM in the server, how are you giving FreeNAS 8G?

4. Are you sure you don't have a failing drive?

Cheers,
Matt

I meant 8gb is allocated to freenas,I have 10gb of RAM.

The disk is not too old and passing smart.

You need to go into significant detail on how this was setup. Did you follow any of the guides or just wing-it?

Also, we need details about what hardware you are using. If you are using incompatible hardware, such as a hardware RAID controller...

Low RAM would cause poor performance but should not cause disk corruption unless you are having memory errors.

Are you able, with that hardware, to pass the entire disk controller through to the FreeNAS VM? You can't pass in virtual disks and expect it to work reliably.
My initial assessment would be that you have incompatible hardware to be able to virtualize FreeNAS.

Take a look at this resource:

"Absolutely must virtualize FreeNAS!" ... a guide to not completely losing your data.

I didn’t follow a guide , no raid , just passing the 8tb directly to the vm

Read the guide I linked above because you are doing it wrong and it is not going to be reliable that way. You can't pass it in as a virtual disk and expect it to work properly.

Is my hard drive dying?

I am still making a plan for sata passthrough....just struggling a bit with it.
also why i am not sure it'll fix my issue is because the 2TB drive works perfectly.

It might be the drive, but it is also possible that it is not the drive. That is the problem with passing in a virtual disk. You don't have direct access to the disk in FreeNAS and that can cause problems, which is why you are not supposed to do it that way.

I can't imagine why you would think it is working perfectly, it is more likely that it just has not become a problem yet.

Here is a link to a 'step by step' guide for how this should be done:

ok so i spent a lot of time on the server since the post.

I installed a new controller. had to recompile proxmox's kernel .

I can now, finally passthrough the sata controller too the VM....woke up this morning ...and...8TB disk degraded.
2TB, healthy.

I am going to install Freenas , temporarily on a flash drive, and see what happens with the disk.
