I have a 24 bay 3.5" chasis with a SAS3 backplane collecting dust so I want to turn it into a diskshelf for my main server.

Am I correct in saying the following is the way to go about it?
1. External HBA in main server, such as 9305-16e.
2. SFF-8644 to SFF-8644 cable between main server and diskshelf
3. SFF-8644 to SFF-8643 passive adapter in diskshelf
4. SFF-8643 to SFF-8087 cables from adapter to backplane

... Or am I missing something?

You'd need SFF-8643 to 8643 from the adapter to the backplane if it's truly an SAS3 backplane.

You may also be missing a controller of some sort to jimmy the power supply on in your chassis. Supermicro has pricey boards that will do this in a controlled fashion, but you may not need anything more than a dummy plug to cause the PSU to start.

The 8087 was a typo :) I would use 8643 on both ends, yes.
And the PSUs I already have covered.
