Hi all,

after having read several build stories mainly based on Supermicro boards I tried a different approach with a C246 chipset as also recommended.
Goal is to get a replacement for my 7y old N54L and upgrade to 10GbE. Currently I run 4x WD RED NAS in 2x RAID1 configuration and want to reuse them at least for a while in the new system. Now the components I have chosen so far are:
  • Silverstone DS380 - would love to have a true 19" rack, but I only have 15.7" room in depth. The 19" cases which fit to the depth usually do not have hot swap disk bays, and I do not want to fiddle around in the whole case if I have to replace a disk (however, this has not happened in 7y now...)
    The case enforces m-ITX boards.
  • Gigabyte C246-WU2 (rev. 1.0)
  • Intel i3-9300T (maybe -8100 or -9100 would be ok as well, but I would like to have it as energy efficient as possible and do not invest too much into cooling)
  • Crucial CT16G4WFD8266 2x16 GB
  • Corsair SF 450 power supply
  • Intel X550-T2 10GbE network card
  • WD Black SN750 NVMe 250 GB boot disk

Any recommendations on the setup much appreciated.

The X550-T2 is a bad choice unless you already have a 10GBase-T network. We have a very nice 10 Gig Networking Primer that discusses what you need to know to use much more affordable SFP+ based networking. The eBay deals are often fantastic, and SFP+ is a better technology.

The SN750 is a waste. Get a cheap NVMe.

A 450W PSU is a bit underpowered for an 8 3.5, 4 2.5 chassis. We have a nice sticky on Proper Power Supply Guidance.

Thanks for the feedback!
I already have a 10G network with a Netgear XS508M and an iMac with 10G interface.
