Hard Drive Troubleshooting Guide (All Versions of FreeNAS)

Hard Drive Troubleshooting Guide (All Versions of FreeNAS)

This guide woefully needs updating. Badblocks was never designed for drives the size we have available now and as such does not run on them. I've been searching for an alternative and have come up empty.

I agree, it could use some updating and I'm more than happy letting someone else provide some good solid facts to update it.

Solonet-Array-Test should test those large hard drives. Here is the resource link.

A must-read for any NAS user.
This guide is amazing! As always this is the forum that keeps on giving. Kudos to joeschmuck!

Glad it worked for you. I really need to update it a bit, hopefully I will have time in the winter.
Excellent !!!!
Like glauco and melloa said - this guide is a joy, and makes resolution of a common but technically demanding problem accessible to new users. It's got good coverage of the necessary background, warnings, precautions, exact commands and what they actually mean, and details for understanding and executing this task, which is essential since something like this can go so wrong if misunderstood by a user not highly skilled in the arcane aspects of FreeBSD hardware commands. A lot of this info also isn't collated anywhere else either, as far as I can tell, and not as neatly. This may even be worth updating and expanding.

I would like to update/expand coverage to include using camcontrol commands but my hardware configuration limits me on what I can do and I only try to publish items which I can test myself. I don't like giving out second hand advice.
This forum is a joy to read because out of the blue you stumble into gems like this resource.
Resource makes troubleshooting puny, failing hard drives very easy - like making Sandvich!
I would also like to say this is a very well written article. As a newbie to FN, I have been able to answer most of my questions by just reading. The resources on this site have been invaluable to me:)
Well written to a point that a new user can follow and troubleshoot a disk problem himself.

I appreciate the review. It's necessary to be as clear as possible in troubleshooting procedures simply because you can't assume someone has the requisite knowledge on how to do something.
