I've just noticed that there is no way in the GUI anymore to export NFS shares as async. This impacts performance, so I assume there was a good reason to do so, Google however doesn't enlighten me. Can anyone else?
This is due to how NFS changed in FreeBSD 9.x. This thread talks about the change (the mentioned patch is not needed but you may be interested in the rc.conf value) and provides some suggestions for increasing performance.
Dragon Killing Points. It's a common method in MMORPGs for how to split up gear when a raid defeats some major boss in the game. You get points for killing bosses in raids, then you "auction" off the gear in the raid for DKP and the gear goes to the highest offer.

to actually install 9.1 right now to find out, but if dlavigne is suggesting that some analogue to the async patch is included in FreeNAS, then basically this is similar to the situation we previously had. Sync writes on NFS are always going to be slowish without some SLOG assistance or some hackery to disable sync mode.
I'd like to include this link as I think anyone who is interested in the issue should be aware that this isn't just a "oh you just throw a switch and it goes faster" sort of thing. This is a data integrity issue and is basically a function of how careful you wish to be with your data.
