Does anyone know if the SuperMicro MDB-X9SCL-F-O can boot from a PCI-E M.2 NVME adapter?

I would like to move away from using USB sticks.

If so is the device only for booting the OS or can extra space be used for other system storage purposes?

Not sure about the "can it boot?" question, but i would expect possibly not... the BIOS needs to be able to target the storage as a boot option. They are usually only expecting that to work for storage they provided like an M.2 slot on the board or a SATA port... or a disk controller providing its own option ROM for booting.

You can put the system dataset on it, but official support stops at that.

@Patrick M. Hausen has a thread that describes how to do it by partitioning, but that's an unsupported rabbit hole I personally wouldn't go down.
