My freenas-boot pool. I get errors indicating that the disk is full.
I'm using a Sandisk Cruiser 16GB.

Code:
root@freenas:~ # zfs list -t filesystem -o space

So I can see where the issue is freenas-boot/ROOT/11.3-U4.1 but I cannot figure out what is causing that amount of files to be created within a 2-3 day period.
I am having other system issues, so I'm guessing an error log may be the culprit.
So first I'm looking to see how can I find the culprit and then remove/the file.

Is your system dataset located on the boot pool (freenas-boot)? If so, try moving it to your data pool.

No - its in a separate pool.

Spearfoot, perhaps my system dataset is located on the boot.
GUI: System: System Dataset, does show my freenas-boot. The Syslog is checked/enabled.
Is this where I need to change from my boot pool to one of my other data set pools?

Yes. I'd give it a try. It may not help, though. Something is causing your boot environment to fill up. I have no idea what is doing that.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will see your post and help out.

OK. So the solution, to change the System Dataset pool, seems to work. At least my boot device is not filling up.
I will open another thread to address the concern about my System Dataset consuming GB of space over a short time span.

Well... USB boot filled up again. Dataset is on my primary pool.
How do I access the freenas-boot to list the contents to "see" what files are consuming the space?

Do you by any chance have FTP configured? A quick search of the forum shows a few people with problems similar to yours caused by malconfigured FTP.

Also, you might try using the du command to see what is using up space. This command might give a clue as to what's using up space in your boot directory:
Code:
du -hsx /boot/*

Sorry for the delayed response. I wiped and replaced my USB boot thumb drive. All was fine as of last night, but today, I find the drive filled up again. So trying to troubleshoot further, this is what I found.
It is the /root/z/* directory that is filling up.

Code:
root@freenas:~ # du -hsx /*
789K /bin
 90M /boot
2.0K /compat
 15M /conf
4.0K /COPYRIGHT
8.1M /data
7.5K /dev
4.5K /entropy
9.1M /etc
6.6M /lib
110K /libexec
512B /media
 13K /mnt
512B /net
512B /proc
6.1M /rescue
 12G /root

when I look at that directory
Code:
root@freenas:~ # du /root/z
12105594 /root/z

Code:
root@freenas:~ # ls -s /root/
total 12105614
       2 .bashrc 1 .profile
       2 .cshrc 2 .shrc
       1 .gdbinit 1 .ssh
       3 .history 1 .warning
       1 .history.8114154 1 .zlogin
       1 .history.8257047 2 .zshrc
       1 .k5login 1 samba
       1 .login 12105594 z
       4 .lsof_freenas

I do not know what this file is and can I remove it? rm /root/z?

Is your NAS accessible from the Internet? This looks like an unwanted guest to me.
What is in that directory?

seems to be a file and not a directory.

OK - that last item helped me out a lot.
I am creating a weekly tar backup of my PlexPass dataset. Seems that it is "dumping" it here.
That at least gives me a better idea of what the problem is.

Code:
root@freenas:~ # cd /root/
root@freenas:~ # ls
.bashrc .history.8114154 .ssh

I deleted the file rm z and that seemed to resolve things once again.

I am creating a weekly tar backup of my PlexPass dataset. Seems that it is "dumping" it here.
You've found the problem! You need to back up this dataset to your pool, not the root user's home directory.

Absolutely agree. However that's not where I had intended to copy it to.
My cron command is attempting to do this:
Code:
tar -rfz /mnt/RiceCloud/Backup/Plex/plexdata.tar.gz "/mnt/RiceCloud/iocage/jails/PlexPass/root/Plex Media Server"

When I try to execute directly (not using CRON):
Code:
root@freenas:~ # ls /mnt/RiceCloud/Backup/Plex/
messages plexdata 2020815.tar.gz plexdata.tar.gz
root@freenas:~ # tar -rfz /mnt/RiceCloud/Backup/Plex/plexdata.tar.gz "/mnt/RiceCloud/iocage/jails/PlexPass/root/Plex Media Server"
tar: Removing leading '/' from member names

You need to cd to a suitable target directory first.

Best done with a conditional: cd /some/where && tar ...
That means "if the cd fails because of a typo, dataset not mounted, whatever, then don't".

that did it. the cd /mnt/RiceCloud/Backup/Plex/ && tar ... worked fine.
thanks so much.
this issue is resolved. thanks to all!
