I am currently running FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6 and thinking about upgrading to 11 and I wanted to know if anyone has had any experience in using MythTV backend on FN 11.

I am also wondering what the value proposition is to upgrade.

My FN system is as follows:
Platform Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-6100 CPU @ 3.70GHz
Memory 32625MB
Drives 2 volumes

Thanks

Ian

I've not yet upgraded to 11. I'm holding out until 11.1 is released. 9.10 has been perfectly stable and I have no reason to upgrade.

Hum... sounds like that makes sense.

Yes, I have found 9.10 to be really good also. But I am still wondering if the upgrade will take all of the jails over, especially Myth-TV backend as that is one of the services I use on it all the time.

Jails will continue to run as normal after an upgrade. The only difference is the OS in the jail will still be 10.3 with the FreeBSD 11 kernel.

Another reason to wait for 11.1 is the jails management will be changing from warden to iocage. So to save yourself re-building your jails twice, just wait for 11.1 and only do it the once.

Now, that being said, iX should be including a way to migrate from warden to iocage as per a couple of commits I've seen in the bug tracker.

I've not yet encountered any need to rebuild the jails from my 9.10 install after I upgraded to 11. They continue to run fine, and I'm able to run regular package upgrades (and install new packages) without issues. I don't seem to be able to add new jails, though, or to compile ports.

or to compile ports
That's expected, since they're tied to the major versions. I think there's work underway to facilitate that sort of task going forward, presumably automating some bhyve magic.

Agreed, the switch from 9.3 to 9.10 had the issue where jails did not update from the FreeBSD 9 base to the FreeBSD 10 and when I upgraded to 11 those jails that started in FreeNAS 9.3 still would not update or upgrade but everything else worked perfectly fine.

However if you are still not on FreeNAS 11 for some reason or another you may as well wait for FreeNAS 11.1 to drop since we are not 100% sure that it will just be a simple switch over to iocage from warden for jails.
