Jbod is an option, but it has it's cons too. I think I am going to do one chassis "..to rule them all.." as they say in Lord Of the Rings.:)

I would like to introduce my first and only contender for the title the best chassis you can want:
Ladies and gentlemen please welcome:
SuperChassis 847BA-R1K28LPB

Is there anything that is missing here in this 36 bay beauty ?
Here are the major pros:

*Direct atached backplane
*Platinum Power Supplies with PM Bus
*2x2.5 hot swap bay for the mirrored boot drives

The best part: your actual computer parts stays on top, in a 2u chassis like, so all hdd from the front 4u suck cold air , and the top 2u half with cpu, ram,mb, etc will exit the back directly without warming the back hdd additionally. Only the air from the front hdd will pass little warmer to the back drives, but not from the cpu, ram,mb. What do you say about that my green friend ?:)

What you guys think about it, is there any flaws I'm missing ?

I'll read more about these new controllers. I didn't know originally they come with the chassis. I thought you are buying them to make you chassis jbod , which is very good idea, that came from the servethehome web site.(the link jgreco post above).

As with almost everything Supermicro, you can buy the parts yourself and integrate them yourself, or you can buy pre-integrated stuff built by Supermicro.

Why would you get a BA chassis? Why not a BE16?

Don't forget that with 36 hard drives and a serverboard in there, this thing's going to weigh in at around 150 lbs (the chassis itself is ~75). Be sure to do at least a two person, if not a three person, lift...

You're already aware of the downsides of flowing air over the second bank of drives so I won't comment on that.

I've given up trying to convince him that expanders are ok (possibly even better due to airflow/cabling issues).

Well for a 36 drive chassis, the alternatives aren't that great... two pricey 16i HBA's?

I mean, I kinda disapprove of the 36 drive units anyways, but that just seems like going out of the way to make some misery.

Do they still rival a J79 in ambient noise generation?
Last time we tested one of the big SM chassis, it was at least twice as loud as the next loudest piece of equipment in our datacenter.

My SC 847 was until I moved the fans to different connections so they are variable speed. Now it's not bad.

I was thinking about 4x9211-8i instead. I have to be low profile with this chassis can't use Full 16i and most if not all 16i are full bracket size.

By thy way I start getting cold feet about the 36 bays !

Talking about noise ... I start falling back in love with SC846. I know it's fans because they are the same in my 2x836TQ chassis. I won't have any surprises on that front.

You mb should have all PWM fan connections on all fan headers , no ?

I do have empty new SuperChassis 826TQ-R500LPB(my favorite 2u chassis). I will use it for this X9SRL-F/1620 v2 freenas build to test the mb , cpu, ram and then I'll move in to 4u chasis(either 847 or 846).

Can you guys tell me which is the best ram I can order for X9SRL-F ? I am trying to be 64GB or 128GB total system memory.

The JBOD controller has both. I bought mine off ebay, so the previous user must not have been using the PWM ones. So I just just moved the fan cables. Voila!

16GB Samsung dimms: M393B2G70DB0-YK0 will get you to 128GB total system memory. If you want to go bigger than 128GB you'll need the 32GB dimms.

Version 3 that you show me it does. but older models were only 3 pins, but you were not talking about the MB headers , so I see what you mean. Thanks for the link . I still can find the item describe on their web , but luckily have the manual.
