Background
I am a long-time FreeNAS user... dating back before the iXsystems days. I was very active on the forums and was a junkie for the latest builds! At a certain point I was unable to keep up but my FreeNAS continued to run strong and meet my needs. In fact, my little NAS continues to chug along without any issues but I feel like the time has come to build/buy a successor.
My current system is still running FreeNAS 0.7.x (now known as NAS4Free) and hums along 24/7/365 as a media server (running SABnzbd, SickBeard, Couch Potato) and file server. It is a humble little dual core machine with 16GB RAM and 4x1TB drives in RAIDZ1. I have a small APC Back-UPS connected in case of a power outage.
The time has come to finally replace my aging FreeNAS 0.7.x system. I am a new father so free time for tinkering is limited these days. I would normally prefer to build my own system from scratch based on community recommendations but just do not have the time to dedicate to a proper build. So that leaves me with the option to buy...
Requirements
Planned Upgrades/Other Items
Right out of the box I intend to upgrade the RAM and purchase a new USB flash drive for boot media. Is there anything else I should consider?

Requirements
- Budget: $450 (or lower) without storage drives
- My FreeNAS Uses:
- Media Server (one or two 1080p streams simultaneously to Kodi clients)
- Plugins (SAB, SB, CP, etc.)
- File Server
- Lenovo TS 140 (Core i3 CPU)
- Dell PowerEdge T20 (Pentium CPU)
- Lenovo TS 440 (Xeon CPU)
- saw these recommended on the forums but cannot find reasonable price
- ... anything else... ?
Planned Upgrades/Other Items
Right out of the box I intend to upgrade the RAM and purchase a new USB flash drive for boot media. Is there anything else I should consider?
Questions
- Is it still OK to boot from USB flash drive?
- Should the boot media be mirrored now that it is ZFS in FreeNAS 9.3 (use 2x USB flash drive)
- Should my storage pool be 3x3TB drive in RAIDZ1 or is RAIDZ1 no longer recommended?
- Any other recommendations for pre-built FreeNAS servers?
- Can anyone using these setups recommend the best way to maximize HDD storage? e.g. the TS140 has a 5.25" optical drive, can I remove this and install an adapter to put additional fan and HDD?
