Why do permissions pertain to volumes instead of shares?

That's not how samba works. I'm using ufs - I don't want to use zfs, and I want my shared folders and user homes to be on the same volume, like every other server I've ever built.

What is it that I'm missing? I've created a group and put users into it but I can't apply the group permissions to a share. Do I have to just enter the right samba parameters in the "extra" section?

Seriously is this a gaping hole or implementation error or does FreeNAS have a better way than all the other NAS devices?

FreeNAS, as with any other Samba server, considers the filesystem permissions and the share permissions independently. The GUI doesn't really help out with that, it does seem to expect you to put each share on a different dataset if you want to mess with the perms in a complex way. Which of course is a ZFS thing...

So yes, looks like you'll have to add them into the aux parms. Unless I'm missing something too - all my stuff is ZFS so datasets are not a problem, and I hadn't noticed this issue.

You should probably put a bug report in for this, or maybe one of the admins can move the thread to the Bugs forum for more discussion.
