When you do a clean install of Ubuntu inside a VirtualBox VM on FreeNAS, Ubuntu will likely come up with only 640x480 px screen res, not offering any higher resolutions in Ubuntu’s Display Preference Panel.
To enable higher resolutions you have to install the so called Guest Additions. While there many manuals, tips and how-tos on the web, I’ve painfully learned (spent nearly half a day on this) this is the only correct method to install the guest additions.
Note that this method has to be applied to a virgin Ubuntu installation. If you’ve tried other tweaks before, you’ll spend hours and hours without fixing the issue.
