Currently there is not dedicated switch in the setup. Instead the built-in one from the router is being used. And my personal experience suggests that this may be the bottleneck. Since getting a simple 5/8 port switch is really cheap, I suggested to do so.
Well, that's really what I meant. It may be on the router, but it is still a switch and functions as a switch. That being said, again, I've never had throughput problems from switches, be it dedicated or built-into a router. Routing/filtering, on the other hand, that's certainly a common bottleneck. However, that's clearly not an issue in single-broadcast domain traffic that doesn't require any routing.
