Hello! Long time FreeBSD'er here with a super strange issue!

A bit of background first. I was using an Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo on an ASUS P5Q SE board with 4GB RAM running Windows 7 Home as my media storage server for the past 10 months or so without issue. I needed more space and wanted it to be redundant so I decided to give FreeNAS a try. I picked up a new Kingston 8GB jump drive and a couple of 3TB hard drives. I configured the drives as a mirrored volume, copied my existing data on there and everything seemed to be working fine.

I use a WDTV Live (wired) to stream media from the FreeNAS to my TV. Until FreeNAS, I never had issues streaming any files to the WDTV before. However, now some files seem to have issues playing back properly...almost like there wasn't enough bandwidth or something. They get all choppy and if I pause them for a moment and then play again, it is sometimes fine for a little bit and then may or may not start stuttering again. I have also had issues streaming some files to a laptop over wireless. The problem seems independent of the client.

At first I thought maybe it was a RAM issue so I picked up another 4GB RAM so it now has 8GB total. That didn't help. Now, when I copy files from FreeNAS to my desktop PC (Windows 8), I'm getting 90-115 KB/sec so it is definitely not a bandwidth problem. I've read through the forum here and tried various tweaks to samba and the tunables but I have been unable to resolve the issue so far. I just bought Sound City and downloaded the 1080p version and I can reliably (every time) reproduce the problem. If I stream that same movie from my desktop PC which is plugged into the same switch, it works flawlessly.

Here is where it gets a little odd. I tried moving the FreeNAS to another switch and then noticed that it wasn't connecting at gigabit speed which was strange since (as far as I knew) it wasn't happening before on the other switch (the switches are both identical). I noticed this right away since my throughput went down to about 10KB/sec. I unplugged the wire from the switch and plugged it in again and then it negotiated at gigabit speed. WTF! So that got me thinking, maybe the network controller is not well supported by FreeBSD. It is an Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCIe Ethernet which uses the ale0 driver. I noticed several people have recommended getting an Intel NIC so I ordered one of those but it hasn't come in yet.

I thought I would share my experience thus far in case someone might suggest something else that I haven't yet tried. I will update once I get the new NIC in there.

Cheers,
Philip

Okay, I've got the Intel NIC in there and having the same problem. Lots of files play just fine and others skip. Some more information:
