Sharing files with different location...? how?

Aside of setting up a local network and NAS how can I share the same directories over the Internet with office at different location?

So basically I have 2 offices at 2 different location, how the second office can access the same files over the Internet?

(I know for FTP, however, its not safe)

How VPN works, basically remote computer will see shared directories as if they are on local network?

Is FreeNAS FREE for business use?
