I realize that there are probably 100's of similar threads but many of them are dated. Some are so exotic in what is trying to be accomplished I figured I would just straight out ask the community at large my question.

Currently I have a dedicated FreeNAS server connected via 1Gb to 48 port 1Gb switch. This provides backup services for several of my home desktops, and storage for my Plex media server. Pretty simple, now the twist.

I am reconfiguring my network because I will be adding 2 Dell R710 servers for development work/virtualization/docker/kuberete and Openstack work.

I am going to shift the drives that were used for Plex media server to the Plex box. Replace the hard drives with both SSDs and some HDDs in the FreeNAS. I will replace the 1Gb switch with a used switch that has at least 4 10gbe SFP+ ports plus 1gb ports (maybe cascade that to the existing gigabit switch).

In the FreeNAS I will add an additional HBA card for the 10Gbe SFP and also in the Dell boxes as well. This might seem like over kill, but my wife because of her work, sometimes needs me to spin up virtual RAC cluster for some testing. I am more concerned about feeding the Dell servers a high speed, high data volume rate.

So I am looking for feedback, constructive criticism, thoughts on this approach.

Jim

You seem to know exactly what you're going to do, and logistics is important in networking. This setup should be incredibly speedy but just make sure that the drives are always spinning since you're putting SSD's in as well that probably won't sleep. Since you're running a full 10Gb network from the NAS to those servers you should see full duplex most of the time and your only single bottleneck is going to be the Hard Disk Drives, but you should definitely expect a couple hundred MB/s if not more from this set-up which can definitely handle everything aforementioned.

If your concern was compatibility with the new HBA's, data isn't a problem here and all you can do is ask the compatibility section with some Hardware ID's and such or test yourself since this should affect data as long as you remain on the main NIC while testing. If none of this is what you're asking please describe in further detail because I feel like I'm missing something here, haha!
