Hi all, I have this setup mb j4205-itx ,16G ddr3l ram, 4tb hdd. I would like to direct play a video file to my TV through HDMI. As I read in several post in this forum, this is not what freeNAS is made for. As I'm an advanced gnu/linux admin, my question is: if I build from deps an X server without decoration, without window management, can I run a VLC pointing out the screen like it was a desktop bsd?
My purpose is not to have a backup solution, just a torrent seed box, file sharing trough laptops in my house and media playing.
Thank you! Regards!

Set up a streaming server, I’m not entirely sure, but I think FreeNAS would have to be recompiled to support a graphics card. In any case, it would be a security nightmare as you would have to run the cast from FreeNAS itself and you cannot install VLC without breaking things.

My advice is a) set up a jail with a streaming server of choice, you can proabobly stream raw video without transcoding or b) install FreeBSD, TrueOS or any *nix flavor and do what you intend. ZFS pools and scrub schedule isn’t really that hard to set up manually. You loose the UI and configuration database (dealbreaker for me) but gain the freedom to set up whatever you want.

Personally I have a Ubuntu desktop with / on ZFS as well as a local mirror pool. This machine would do what you want. But for my server I require effortless system backups and I don’t want to mess around with cli for routine tasks.

I backup my config after every change and store it in three different places
