Explained here, they provide thumbnails for graphical seeking and thumbnail fading. However, they didn't quite quantify how much of a performance hit it can have on a NAS.

So far, I've generated media index files for 4 movies in 3 hours. These files range between 6Mbps to 20 Mbps bitrate for 720p and 1080p movies.

I'm generating these files on an A4-3300 so those with i5s or Xeons will probably have a much more bearable time.

My performance has been excellent. Using a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31220 @ 3.10GH with 16GB or ram, I setup a section and loaded in 540 movies in 38 mins on FreeNAS 9.1.1/Plex 0.9.8.6.175_p1. My files are much smaller being 720p and roughly 3Mbps although it's not clear to me what effect file size has.

Jeren,

Your problem is most likely because you went with a very low performing CPU. Can't expect miracles with a CPU that has 1MB of L2 cache.

You are the perfect example of why I tell people to overdesign their system somewhat. Otherwise later after you've built the system you are disappointed with its performance.

You know, that's exactly what happened. It was perfectly fine for torrenting and backing up, but anything media-related punishes my CPU.

I am thinking about a SuperMicro board and a Xeon E3-1230 v2, although that's pretty much dependent on how development for the Plex plugin goes. Until then, it'll probably be a few weeks until I generate all the media index files for my 700 movies

That's the exact CPU and board that I have. For home users, it can't be beat.
