yes indeed I did. Same error.

I did try a couple things on stackoverflow page. One thing I tried that changed the error from 2 to 38 was "touch /tmp/mysql.sock

I tried to post the link but this website gave me an error saying I couldn't. It said what the minimum requirements were and I met them all but still wouldn't let post the url

well touching that file will cause mysql to not be and to use it as a socket.
please stop mysql, delete the file, and start it again.

service mysql-server stop
rm /tmp/mysql.sock
service mysql-server start

Well that seemed to do the trick for some reason.....

Code:
root@OwnCloud:~ # service mysql-server stop
mysql not running? (check /var/db/mysql/OwnCloud.pid).
root@OwnCloud:~ # rm /tmp/mysql.sock
root@OwnCloud:~ # service mysql-server start
Starting mysql.
root@OwnCloud:~ # mysql_secure_installation

NOTE: RUNNING ALL PARTS OF THIS SCRIPT IS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL MariaDB
SERVERS IN PRODUCTION USE! PLEASE READ EACH STEP CAREFULLY!

In order to log into MariaDB to secure it, we'll need the current
password for the root user. If you've just installed MariaDB, and
you haven't set the root password yet, the password will be blank,
so you should just press enter here.

Enter current password for root (enter for none):
OK, successfully used password, moving on...

Setting the root password ensures that nobody can log into the MariaDB
root user without the proper authorisation.

Set root password? [Y/n] y
New password:
Re-enter new password:
Password updated successfully!
Reloading privilege tables..
... Success!

By default, a MariaDB installation has an anonymous user, allowing anyone
to log into MariaDB without having to have a user account created for
them. This is intended only for testing, and to make the installation
go a bit smoother. You should remove them before moving into a
production environment.

Remove anonymous users? [Y/n] y
... Success!

Normally, root should only be allowed to connect from 'localhost'. This
ensures that someone cannot guess at the root password from the network.

Disallow root login remotely? [Y/n] y
... Success!

By default, MariaDB comes with a database named 'test' that anyone can
access. This is also intended only for testing, and should be removed
before moving into a production environment.

Remove test database and access to it? [Y/n] y
- Dropping test database...
... Success!
- Removing privileges on test database...
... Success!

Reloading the privilege tables will ensure that all changes made so far
will take effect immediately.

Reload privilege tables now? [Y/n] y
... Success!

Cleaning up...

All done! If you've completed all of the above steps, your MariaDB
installation should now be secure.

Thanks for using MariaDB!

OK, I have NEVER used vi because I don't understand it and find it EXTREMELY difficult to use.

On the line where you execute
Code:
crontab -u (editted out due to website glitch) -e

I assume it is opening vi so you can put in a cron task.
How in the heck do you get it to allow you to write the task, save and then exit? I've always had to hit CTRL+Z to abort the application. It was the only key I could find to get out of the dang application

OK, I had to use "i" to start insert then pasted the command, "Esc" and then ":wq" then "Enter" to get it to quit with the output...
Code:
/tmp/crontab.UEktUDcCB0: 1 lines, 68 characters.
crontab: installing new crontab

When I try to browse to the ip/owncloud I get 502 Bad Gateway

OK, Where in the OwnCloud WebGUI are you finding the Advanced option?

Under the initial user drop down all I see is the admin option and the user options

your supposed to do that stuff at the very first setup screen where you create your admin account. your past that point. you can fix things in the owncloud/config/config.php and move files from owncloud/data or just start from scratch.

Ive never seen the advanced setup screen. Only the welcome screen that shows you what apps you can download to sync to your new server.
