I was booting from a single USB drive. I bought two new identical ones to replace the single, and followed the process detailed in Sec 5 of the manual:
  1. plugged NewUsb1 in, then system, boot, status, click on mirror, click on attach
  2. chose da1
  3. waited for the resilvering to complete, all's well. Status of the boot volume is healthy.
  4. plugged newusb2 in, then system, boot, status, click on da0, click on replace
  5. waited for the resilvering to complete
Looked at the console messages, the last message was
Code:
Feb 23 20:23:16 freenas notifier: /usr/local/sbin/grub-install: error: failed to get canonical path of `/dev/replacing-0'.

Pleading for help on #freenas, was told to grub-install --modules='zfs part_gpt' /dev/da2 which worked without error.

Some say this is https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/6993 but the grub-install error is different.

Am I safe?

Should be. You could always test by powering down, pulling the first USB and seeing if the system will boot from the second one.
